【FEATURE】SEIYU — HAPPY TO HELP
2019–2022 / Brand Communication
[Social Sculptor] [Reverse Engineer] [Media Orchestration]
Creating New Value for a Supermarket Beyond Low Prices.
SEIYU, one of Japan's major supermarket chains, faced a fundamental marketing challenge: how could it create meaningful value beyond its Everyday Low Price (EDLP) positioning?
While low prices remained central to the brand, consumers also placed great importance on the freshness and quality of food. Yet conventional claims about freshness, origin, and quality made it difficult for supermarkets to differentiate themselves.
We focused on the produce section, one of the most important areas shaping customers' perceptions of a supermarket. Rather than simply communicating the freshness of vegetables, we explored how SEIYU could create a distinctive reason for customers to choose its products.
Our starting point was SEIYU's brand philosophy at the time, "HAPPY TO HELP." We interpreted this as an opportunity to solve everyday food-related problems in ways only SEIYU could.
This approach evolved into "MEAL SOLUTION," a series of initiatives designed to create brand value by addressing real challenges in people's daily lives.
Beginning with "KIDS LOVE VEGETABLES" in 2019, the initiatives evolved to address changing consumer needs and everyday challenges, including adults' dislike of vegetables, insufficient vegetable intake, the burden of cooking, the joy of dining at home, and household food expenses.
Rather than simply producing advertising films, these initiatives combined consumer research, recipe development, practical experiments, PR, social media, and in-store experiences.
Beyond food-related challenges, SEIYU also developed broader brand communications, including a film portraying employees supporting local communities during the COVID-19 pandemic and a comedy competition centered on affordability and value.
These nine projects were not conceived as a four-year campaign from the outset. The collaboration evolved through successive initiatives and their results, expanding into nine distinct projects between 2019 and 2022.
Together, they represent an approach to brand communication that goes beyond promoting products—creating meaningful experiences, solving real consumer problems, and transforming how people perceive a brand. [Social Sculptor] [Reverse Engineer] [Media Orchestration]
